Sharjah (Ash-Shariqah) is the only one of the emirates that shares
boundaries with all of the others plus Oman. It has an area of 1,000 sq. mi.
(2,600 sq. km.). Sharjah was an important pirate base in the 18th and early
19th centuries. Most of the treaties and diplomatic relations were with
