Baroda

A city near the northern edge of the west coast, just east of the Bay of Cambay and the Kathiawar Peninsula. A Maratha stronghold in the 18th century.
Baroda State was a state in present-day Gujarat, ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty of the Maratha Confederacy from its formation in 1721 until 1949 when it acceded to the newly formed Union of India. With the city of Baroda (Vadodara) as its capital, during the British Raj its relations with the British were managed by the Baroda Residency. Area: 20,976.44 km² (1901). Villages: 3,035 (plus 47 towns). State Forces: 3,924 (1945). The revenue of the state in 1901 was Rs.136,61,000. At the time of Indian independence, only five rulers—the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Maharaja of Mysore, the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, the Maharaja Shrimant Gaekwar of Baroda and the Maharaja Scindia of Gwalior were entitled to a 21-gun salute. Baroda formally acceded to the Union of India on 01 May 1949, prior to which an interim government was formed in the state.
The population was 2,032,798 persons as per the 1911 census of India and approximately 2,855,000 in 1941 and 1,952,692 when joined India. The state was very wealthy. The Pittsburgh Press reported in 1927 that the diamond necklace, which contained the Star of the South diamond, was a part of a royal collection worth $10,000,000 at the time, housed in the Nazarbaug Palace (built 1721) in Baroda city; another important part of the collection was a cloth embroidered with precious stones and seed pearls, made to cover the tomb of Mohammed.
Ethnic groups: Gujarati 87%, Bhil 7%, other 6% (1931). Religions: Hindu 77%, traditional 13%, Muslim 8%, other 2% (1941). Anthem: "Gaekwadi".
Dr. B.R.Ambedkar writes about his experience with untouchability in Baroda in the second chapter of his autobiographical book, "Waiting for a Visa".

  • The Marathas first attacked Gujarat in 1705. By 1712, a Maratha leader Khande Rao Dabhade grew powerful in the region and when he returned to Satara in 1716, he was made the senapati (commander in chief). Thereafter during the "Battle of Balapur" in 1721, one of his officers, Damaji Gaekwad was awarded the title Shamsher Bahadur or Distinguished Swordsman. Damaji died in 1731 and was succeeded by his nephew Pilajirao.
Thus the Baroda State was founded in 1731, when the Maratha general Pilaji Gaekwad conquered Songadh from the Mughals. Prior to this Pilajirao was appointed as general to collect revenues from Gujarat by the Peshwa, the effective ruler of the Maratha Empire, who had taken over the region north and south of Surat from the Mughals to established the Sarkar of Surat. Songadh remained the headquarters of the "House of Gaekwad" until 1866. After the Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803–1805), the East India Company wrested control of much of Gujarat from the Marathas. However the Gaekwads of Baroda (Vadodara), made a separate peace with the British, entering into a subsidiary alliance which acknowledged British suzerainty and control of the state's external affairs in return for retaining internal autonomy.

He married about 1866 with HH Maharani Jamna Bai Sahiba (born c. 1853 and died on 29 November 1898). He had children and also an adopted son: Rani Tara Bai Sahib (daughter; born 05 July 1871, married 21 December 1879 to Raja Sahib Raghunath Savant Bhonsle Raje Bahadur of Savantvadi. The Koli rebellion was led by two brothers Nathaji Patel And Yamaji Patel, chiefs of Chandap Taluq. During the great Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Kolis of Chandap under Nathaji and Yamaji planned for revolt and Gaekwad of Baroda received that news. So Gaekwad stationed their cavalry at Chandap to control the rebels. But cavalry of Gaekwad was killed and thrown out by Kolis of Chandap. After that Kolis went into hills to continue their rebellion for few months. In the end of October 1857, the combined forces of British and Baroda attacked the Kolis and burnt the Chandap village.
Makarpura Palace was built by Maharaja Khende Rao in 1870. Following the death of Sir Khanderao Gaekwad, the popular Maharaja of Baroda was expected to be his brother, Malharrao. However, Malharrao had already proven himself to be of the vilest character and had been imprisoned earlier for conspiring to assassinate Khanderao. As Khanderao's widow, Maharani Jamnabai (1853–1898) was already pregnant with a posthumous child, the succession was delayed until the gender of the child could be proven. The child proved to be a daughter, and so upon her birth on 05 July 1871, Malharrao ascended the throne.

  • He was regent to 05 Jul 1871; suspended from 13 Jan 1875. He was born in 1831 and died in 1882. Malharrao spent money liberally, nearly emptying the Baroda coffers (he commissioned a pair of solid gold cannon and a carpet of pearls, among other expenses) and soon reports reached the Resident of Malharrao's gross tyranny and cruelty. Malharrao further attempted to cover up his deeds by poisoning the Resident, Colonel R. Phayre C.B. with a compound of arsenic. By order of the Secretary of State for India, Lord Salisbury, Malharrao was deposed on 19 April 1875 and exiled to Madras, where he died in obscurity in 1882. He married first to HH Maharani Mahalsa Bai Sahiba and then secondly to HH Maharani Lakshmi Bai Sahiba. He had two sons: Maharajkumar Vyankatrao Malharrao Gaekwad and Maharajkumar Jayasinghrao Malharrao Gaekwad (by Lakshmi Bai; born 16 December 1874, not recognized as legitimate by the authorities).
  • Sir Madhav Rao Thanjavurkar (regency council)......19 Apr 1875 - 25 May 1875
  • He was chairman of regency council. He was born in c. 1828 and died on 04 April 1891. With the throne of Baroda now vacant, Maharani Jamnabai called on the heads of the extended branches of the dynasty to come to Baroda and present themselves and their sons in order to decide upon a successor. Kashirao and his three sons, Anandrao (1857–1917), Gopalrao (1863–1938) and Sampatrao (1865–1934) walked to Baroda from Kavlana-a distance of some 600 kilometers-to present themselves to Jamnabai. Eventually Gopalrao was selected by the British Government as successor and was accordingly adopted by Maharani Jamnabai, on 27 May 1875. He was also given a new name, Sayajirao. On 16 June 1875, he ascended the throne as Sayajirao Gaekwad III, but being a minor, reigned under a Council of Regency until he came of age and was invested with full ruling powers on 28 December 1881.
Madhava Rao was born in a Thanjavur Marathi Deshastha Brahmin family of Kumbakonam in 1828 and had his education in Madras. After serving for two years in the Madras civil service, Madhava Rao was appointed tutor to the princes of Travancore. Impressed with his performance, Madhava Rao was transferred to the Revenue Department in which he rose step by step to become Diwan in 1857. Madhava Rao served as Diwan of Travancore from 1857 to 1872 bringing about developments in education, legislation, public works, medicine, vaccination and public health and agriculture. He was also responsible for clearing Travancore's public debts. Madhava Rao quit as Diwan of Travancore and returned to Madras in 1872. He served as Diwan of Indore from 1873 to 1875 and as Diwan of Baroda from 1875 to 1882. In his later life, Madhava Rao actively participated in politics and was one of the early pioneers of the Indian National Congress. Madhava Rao died in 1891 in Mylapore, Madras at the age of 63. Madhava Rao was respected and regarded for his administrative abilities. British Liberal statesman Henry Fawcett called him "the Turgot of India". Y#30.2a Pai. Year: VS 1950 (1893). Weight: 1.94 g. Metal: Copper. Diameter: 18.50 mm. Edge: Plain. Alignment: Medal. Mint: N/A.

"सरकार" (sarkaar) [Government] written in Nagari above within the center dotted circle. Horse hoof in the center with scimitar below it; both within the dotted center circle. 7 dots design on left and right side as seperator, outside the center dotted circle. "बडोदे" (Baroda) written in Nagari at the bottom within two dotted circle borders. Mintage: N/A. Mintage Years: VS1948 (1891), VS1949 (1892) and VS1950 (1893). Ruler: Sayaji Rao III (1875-1939).

Note: The first milled coins were produced in limited numbers towards the end of Malhar Rao's reign, but the switch took place over several years, through the 1880's. At this time, the use of Persian letters was eliminated, to be replaced by Devanagari, and entirely new designs were initiated. Also, the use of the AH date was dropped, replaced by dates in the VS (Vikram era of 57 BCE).

Y#31.1 Paisa. Year: VS 1941 (1884). Weight: 7.77 g. Metal: Copper. Diameter: 24.50 mm. Edge: Plain. Alignment: Medal. Mint: N/A.

Type 1: Thick and large legends on both sides. On Reverse side, the inner legend "sarkaar" is written in curved form with long hoof and thick scimitar it. It is made on Thick planchet.

Obverse: Circular leaf wreath within the two dotted circle borders. "सवत" (samvat) [year] written in Nagari at the top, "एक पैसा" (ek paisa) [One Paisa] written in the middle and VS Date at the bottom; all within the center dotted circle.

Reverse: "श्री सयाजीराव.म.गायकवाड." (Shri Sayajirao.Ma.Gayakwad.) written in Nagari at the top section within two dotted circle borders. "सरकार" (sarkaar) [Government] written in Nagari above within the center dotted circle. Horse hoof in the center with scimitar below it; both within the dotted center circle. One dot on left and right side as seperator, outside the center dotted circle. "सेना खास खेल शमशेर बहादुर." (sena khaas khel shamasher bahaadur.) written in Nagari at the bottom within two dotted circle borders. Mintage: N/A. Mintage Years: VS1940 (1883), VS1941 (1884) and VS1942 (1885). Ruler: Sayaji Rao III (1875-1939).

Note: The first milled paisas of Sayaji Rao were issued in VS 1940 (1883) and had the word "sarkar" on the obverse in a curved configuration; this coin has that word off-center to the left in earlier releases. However the displayed coin has he word "sarkar" on the obverse is centered. This coin still appears to belong to an experimental phase of the coinage, since the circular border wreath on the reverse resembles the design on the previous coin rather than later coins. The letters on the reverse are also uncharacteristically large. In VS 1940 (1883), a different parallel issue was also produced, having four compound petals rather than the daisy-like 9-10 petal flowers in circular wreath.

Y#31.2 Paisa. Year: VS 1941 (1884). Weight: 7.95 g [8.00 - 8.30 g]. Metal: Copper. Diameter: 24.50 mm. Edge: Plain. Alignment: Medal. Mint: N/A.

Type 2: On Reverse side, the inner legend "sarkaar" is written straight, with short hoof below it. It is made on Thick planchet. Weight varies: 8.00 - 8.30 grams.

Mintage Years: VS1941 (1884), VS1942 (1885), VS1943 (1886), VS1944 (1887), VS1945 (1888), VS1946/3 (1889), VS1946/4 (1889), VS1946 (1889), VS1947 (1890) and VS1948 (1891). Ruler: Sayaji Rao III (1875-1939).

Note: Varieties exist with different separator (dot) between upper and lower legends on Obverse side, Numbers and space distance of Dots in Dotted circles, Shapes of scimitar and Font size / Font style.

The early milled coins of Sayaji Rao were heavier than the later ones; this coin is of the heavy type, over 8.00 grams, on 24.50 mm flan, which were on thick planchet. Later ones were of reduced weight on 2.50 mm planchet. The letter ma in the obverse legend presumably stood for "maharaj." We see the old title "shamsher bahadur" originally given to Damajirao Gaekwad in 1720, and also the title "sena khas khel" (Commander of the Sovereign Band).

Same as above coin Y#31.2 Paisa, but...

Note: In Y#31.2, we notice in later years, slightly low weight and having thinner planchet as indicated for above coin. In all other respects, it resembles the same design. Curiously, the latest edition of Krause does not distinguish between this slightly low weight series and the heavy weight coins under this reference number. However, it is clear that there was a reduction of weight starting in VS 1947 (1890).
